This bridge structure is unique in that it is recognized as a worldwide wonder and engineering marvel, and beloved by the local community.
Extensive structural inspections were performed to ascertain damage and section loss to all components of the superstructure (girders, cross frames, lateral bracing, knee braces, floor beams, bearings, connections, stiffeners).
The bridge rehabilitation is also compatible with the current historical and architectural qualities and consistent with the recommended approaches set forth in the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and Illustrated Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings
The primary purpose of this project is to restore safe access to Pigeon Key by performing repairs to address various deficiencies such as structural steel member and surface coating corrosion and concrete cracks and spalls.
