To accomplish this goal, traffic was re-routed from Interstate North Parkway with two lanes in each direction winding around the Weather Channel complex and paralleling I-75, to Interstate North Circle with one lane in each direction and a center turn lane. Interstate North Parkway was repurposed as a local street with three lanes and a multi-use trail. The project also linked the Cumberland area multi-use trail system to the Windy Ridge pedestrian bridge and SunTrust Park area.

This high-priority project started in November 2015 with the directive to be open for traffic by April 2017 for the Braves first pitch for season opening day in the newly-constructed SunTrust Park. The project team, consisting of Cobb County DOT, Cumberland CID, Georgia DOT, H&L and subconsultants, and CMES Construction, let the project to begin construction in October 2016. Phase 1 of construction, the critical section consisting of the multi-use trail to connect parking lots and the Marriott hotel to the Windy Ridge Pedestrian bridge and SunTrust Park, was completed in time for the first pitch. Phase 2 of construction, consisting of large storm drain repair, large and numerous walls, and reconstruction of Interstate North Circle, was completed and open to traffic in June 2018. The project was funded with local and state funds.
H&L provided complete design services for the roadway widening and sidewalk improvements.

The project scope covered every aspect of design and coordination from contract negotiation to post-construction services, as necessary, and includes right-of-way staking; complete roadway, drainage, pavement, lighting, landscaping, and wall designs; right-of-way plans and documents; public and stakeholder coordination and meetings; soil reports; wall foundation reports; utility coordination and relocation; and coordination with stakeholders. The design required coordination with the Cumberland CID for streetscape and lighting theme.

Interstate North Parkway and Interstate North Circle

Interstate North Parkway and Interstate North Circle, located in the northeast quadrant of the I-285/I-75 interchange, serve north-south commuters and the employment center around the Cobb Chamber of Commerce and the Weather Channel. The goal of this project was to repurpose/reconfigure the two urban roads to improve north-south mobility, provide safe and enhanced accommodations for pedestrian traffic in the area, and handle daily traffic demands as well as traffic generated by events at SunTrust Park.
