Gandy Boulevard (SR 694) is an east/west urban principal arterial in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. It is part of the National Highway System and Florida’s Strategic Intermodal System (SIS) and is a designated hurricane evacuation route. The primary objective of this project is to improve east/west traffic flow through the design and reconstruction of Gandy Boulevard in Pinellas County from east of I-275 to east of 4th Street North to provide a four to six lane-controlled access facility. Improvements include grade-separated interchanges, frontage roads, the replacement of the existing box culvert on 4th Street North at Tinney Creek, new drainage, and sidewalks, as well as other improvements. The innovative design resulted in a $37 Million savings to FDOT.
Structural improvements include six new bridge structures consisting of twin single span FIB bridges, twin 8-span FIB bridges, and twin 2-span curved continuous steel plate girder bridges. The steel bridges are supported by a severely skewed continuous 2-span integral steel straddle cap. Some of the most important Bridge Structures in this project are described below:
- Bridge Nos. 150278 and 150279 – Twin single span Florida-I 72 Beam bridges carrying SR 694 over 94th Avenue (Westbound and Eastbound). Straight beams on a curved alignment skew. MSE/End Bent Foundations supported on 24-inch precast concrete piles. Responsible for checking calculations to include CONSPAN runs, Deck Design, beam detailing, Expansion Joints/bearings, pile loads, backwall design, end bent design, wingwalls, and reinforcing bar lists.
- Bridge Nos. 150282 and 150283 – Twin eight-span Florida-I 72 Beam bridges carrying SR 694 over Roosevelt Boulevard and 4th Street (Westbound and Eastbound). Straight beams on a curved alignment skew. Multi-column piers supported on 24-inch precast concrete piles. MSE/End Bent Foundations supported on 24-inch precast concrete piles. Responsible for checking calculations to include CONSPAN runs, Deck Design, beam detailing, Expansion Joints/bearings, pile loads, backwall design, end bent design, wingwalls, and reinforcing bar lists.
- Bridge Nos. 150280 and 150281 – Twin two-span curved steel plate girder bridges carrying SR 694 over 9th Street (Westbound and Eastbound). Continuous integral two-span 224-foot 9-inch long steel straddle cap supported by single column piers founded on 24-inch precast concrete piles. MSE/End Bent Foundations supported on 24-inch precast concrete piles.
BCC was the Lead Designer for this project, and also provided design services for Structures, Roadway, Drainage, and ITS.
BCC Engineering transformed Gandy Boulevard from I-275 to east of 4th Street North in Pinellas County by designing an elevated roadway with three separate interchanges and frontage roads. This improvement allows the permanent and transient population of businesses and residents to make the connection from I-275 to Gandy Boulevard in a safer and more efficient manner.
