Project: SR 5/US 1 Reconstruction and Bridge Replacement from N of Kings Highway (SR 713) to S of Oslo Road
Client: FDOT District 4
Cost: $24 Million
Location: St. Lucie County and Indian River Counties, FL
Description: BCC is serving as the prime consultant in responsible charge of this important project. US-1 serves as the major North–South alternative to I-95 along the Treasure Coast, access points to I-95 and the SR 713 Turnpike Feeder Road. This particular segment of US-1 within Indian River County recently experienced the highest volume of commuter traffic recorded in the County, including I-95.
The existing roadway is being reconstructed from a four-lane divided rural typical section with open shoulders to a six-lane high-speed suburban typical section with Type E curb and gutter.
The project introduces a closed drainage system with both wet and dry ponds. The drainage design included an innovative overflow of treated discharge into an existing conservation area which actually improves environmental conditions.
Improvements to roadway alignment further minimized impacts to include wetlands as well as protected plant species. Project included replacement of two bridge structures with twin bridge structures over the FEC Railroad and Old Dixie Highway. One of the existing bridge structures was historic. Modular concrete bridge construction was used to minimize the construction footprint; concrete bridge columns and caps pre precast off site in a controlled facility and transported for erection.
