Project Info

Project: SR 826 (Palmetto Expressway) Improvements Program Design-Build Project, Section 2
Client: FDOT District 6
Cost: $192 Million
Location: Miami-Dade County

Description: The opening of the Palmetto Section 2 project provided much-needed congestion relief for the residents of Miami-Dade County.  This $192 million Design-Build project reconstructed the system-to-system interchange of SR 826 (Palmetto Expressway) and SR 874 (Don Shula Expressway). Project highlights included the introduction of a Collector-Distributor (CD) Road system to handle all ramp movements, reconstruction of the Miller Drive and Bird Road Interchanges, addition of a new pedestrian bridge, and the construction of eight new bridges – including four highly-skewed (Category 2) complex steel bridges.  The innovative BCC design and construction techniques employed by the team saved FDOT $53 million over initial budget and delivered the project 167 days ahead of schedule.
